US bombs Pakistan —again

A suspected US drone fired two missiles in Pakistan’s South Waziristan region Jan. 2, killing four fighters, Pakistani intelligence sources said. The strike targeted an area believed as a stronghold of militant leader Baitullah Mehsud. It was the second missile attack in South Waziristan in as many days. Two missiles fired on Jan. 1 from a suspected US drone killed three alleged foreign fighters.

Local residents said the Jan. 1 strike hit a car just south of Wana village. The militants killed are said to have been from Turkmenistan, and were apparently followers of militant leader Maulvi Nazir. Two bystanders were also injured. An associate of Maulvi Nazir condemned the attack and warned of revenge. The new missile strikes came even as Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the Pakistani foreign minister, urged the US to stop drone attacks inside Pakistan’s territory. (AlJazeera, Dawn, Pakistan, Jan. 2)
