I don't think Steinsaltz "conceived" the Sanhedrin - he's just the respectable front-man. The real driving force is a bunch of hard-core Kahanists, the most influential of whom are Yosef Dayan (who believes he's the rightful monarch of Israel) and Nachman Kahane, brother of the late Meir. I - ahem - wrote about this here. There are also a few non-Jewish "Noahides" involved - including a pseudo-archeologist named Vendyl Jones. Every five years or so he tells credulous hacks that he's on the verge of finding the Ark of the Covenant, and he gets a spurt of media attention.
The inconvenient facts and unanswered questions surrounding the attacks are legion, but the endemic sloppiness of the self-styled "researchers" is delegitimizing the entire project of critiquing the "official version." The ostentatiously named "Truth movement" is not clearing the air, but muddying the water.
