Mel leaves himself just a slight degree of wiggle room. One of the priests officiating on the pyramid-top is portrayed using the eclipse to his advantage (while others of them seem just as panicked as the commoners below). But even he seems to be improvising, not playing out a pre-meditated plan. Sorry.
